Operations Officer
Passed away in Lebanon PA on 6 Oct 2001.
My father, Albert G. Brinkmann MM was on the Mazama 1944 till the surrender outside Tokoyo harbor. I remember him telling me about the torpedo that hit the ship, opening a hole big enough to drive a tractor trailer through. He also told me of a Jap plane that hit the ship and dove into an empty munitions hold blowing the cargo deck doors off and killing sailors. I am stunned not to see his name on the crew list. He left the ship in Seattle due to a death in the family and didn’t go to San Diego.
Served on MAZAMA — October 1961 to December 1964, EM 3 / 2
Hey Brothers. I was on the WesPac Cruise in 1969. EN-3 Ray Brunelle. I’ve been retired almost two years now and just getting into this social computer stuff. My time on the Mazama was the most notable of my four years. It would be nice to do liberty in Subic one more time and be twenty doing it. Wish the best of health to all and take pride in being part of the crew
Ed, very nice tribute to Jim. He will be missed. He was a great shipmate and a good man. I still have a picture of you and me drinking in Subic Bay. Please give his family my very best. Not sure you remember me….Goose EN2 A Div, tried to email you but it wouldn’t go thru.

I was asked to put together a few words about Our ‘Ol Friend and Brother BT3 Jim “Moonshiner” Reed….Just a bunch of kids thrown together on the USS MAZAMA AE-9 an Old WWII Ammunition Ship that had seen better days before some of us were born…LOL, I can still remember Jimmy coming down the ladder to the lower Engineroom for a Cup of Joe, He always looked like Al Jolson, Covered head to toe in Soot! Crossed the 180th Meridian in Latitude 21 36’ N on 21 April, 1966, went through both the Panama & Suez Canals and Circled the Globe before our return home in Dec ’66. Jim Reed fought more Battles with the Illnesses bestowed upon us during those times and he did so with the Strength and Character of a Sailor of the United States Navy. Just a Good ‘Ol Country Boy, he did the Country he Loved, the US Navy, his Family and Shipmates Proud and he will be sorely missed. On Behalf of the Crew of the USS Mazama AE-9 it is with the Deepest Respect and Sympathy that we say Farewell to our Brother and wish Him Safe Travels, Fair Winds and Following Seas, you’ve Earned your Place in Heaven my Friend, Rest Well. Again, to Bobbi, Jim’s children. All his Family and Friends our Deepest Sympathy for your Loss.
