E-mail from Robert Crandall forwarded to Doc in 2010:
To all those who served on the Mazama under Captain Peter Viscardi it is with regret I am sending this email out to you to inform you of his death. I received a call from his son also,Peter Viscardi, that he has passed away about 3 wks ago after having surgery at the VA Hospital that he was at in Alabama. If anyone wishes to send a condolence if you send it to me at my email address I will be glad to forward them to his son. If anyone has a memory that they would like to rely he would more then glad to receive them as his father always remembered the crew of the Mazama even after his Alzheimer.
Comment from Michael Mayes:
I am saddened to hear of the Captain’s death. We were in Hawaii, it was raining and me and a few of the guys were walking back to the ship. Captain Viscardi and the XO and a few other officers were drivingby, he made the car stop, threw out a few of the officers (including the XO) told us to get in and drove us back to the ship. I never forgot him.

Being in different Divisions, I did not know Phil until years later when we launched the Cuban Blockade Survivors Association. I last saw Phil at the 50th Anniversary of the Blockade held at Mayport.
Phil passed away in November 2012, after battling cancer for some time.
May Phil have fair winds and a following sea.
Seaman 1st Div
I spoke with Fred’s wife, and he loved his days aboard the Mazama…always talked about them. Fred was 68 when he passed. I understand some of you knew him quite well….Kenny Rayborn, Bobby Herein, Moon Shiner, and possibly Bill Masterson who also spent his time aboard Mazama, so Doc when you receive this, please place on the Memorial Page. The next time you have a toast please raise one for Fred. I’ve sent a Mass card to his wife Shirley from all of us. (Received while site was down and have just added to the new site-Doc)

Smitty was a recommissioning plank owner in 1961. Came aboard as BM3 in First Division and made 2nd Class before he left in 1963. Retired as Chief. Don’t know if he made E-8 or E-9. Even when I was a Seaman, Smitty treated us well. He was a great guy. The way he was suffering, it was a blessing he passed away quietly. In talking to him, he was prepared to ship out. Best Regards, Paul
