I was the ET on the MAZ from 1965 to December 1967. I came aboard in Mayport, Fla. I left the ship in Naples, Italy for my discharge after 4 years. I was part of the deployment from Davisville,R.I. to go to the rearming off the coast of Vietnam. We stopped in Panama City after Panama Canal then stopped in Hawaii. Then we went to our new home port Subic Bay, Phillipines. After our tour was up we left for what our trip around the world, went below the equator and through the Suez canal, stops in the Med and then home to Davisville. The Maz then went back to the Mediterranean in August 67.
Chuck Tabor RM2 says
Don, I remember you distinctly, I was on the Mazama the same time frames you were. I went from E3 to RM2 during my time on the Mazama. I was discharged in Jul 68. ET3 Ball and I used to commute to Balto, Md in his Triumph. I am sure you remember Jim Grady RM3 also. I re-enlisted in 1970 and eventually retired in Nov 87 as an RMCS. Do you remember the CO of the Mazama, CAPT Don Kiley? I ran in to him in 1989 working in Alexandria, VA, he was the COO of a company called SEMCOR who I worked for briefly also.

Don and Chuck,
I remember you both, especially Don who taught me so much as a junior ET. Left the Mazama after the Med tour and was transfer to the USS Wrangell AE-12. I left the Navy after the WestPac tour in 1970, graduated in 1974 from the University of Maryland. I retired last year after 40 years in the Pentagon for the Department of Defense. I live today in Northern Virginia. I would like to hear from you both.
