RMC Rice was my leading chief prior to his death coming back from Westpac. He was a great chief to work for, he taught me a lot. I was really shaken the night he passed. I was on watch when we got the word he had a heart attack. He was working out in the evenings wanting to get back into shape for our return to Davisville, R.I. I had a lot of respect for RMC! A good man.
I remember that night well. HM Chief Ford would not go near Chief Rice he was so grief stricken, they had just played cards that night. I had to dress him for our emergency stop at Beirut Lebanon to send him back to the states. As a young 20 year year old, it was an experience that has remained with me all these years. Doc
CPO Rice was my first CPO leader, he was a Chief’s Chief, didn’t take any crap but was always there for the troops. I was on watch in Radio the night he passed. It was an honor to have served with Chief Rice.
I spent 22 years in and became an RMCS in no small part to Chief Rice’s mentoring!
