Anyone remember off loading emergency papa flares and munitions in Da Nang and Cameron Bay 1969-1970?

I vividly remember the Da Nang adventure, I believe it was June ’69. We lowered boats into the water and gunners mates circled the ship the entire time we were anchored with powerful lights to deter anyone from attaching a charge to our hull. I also remember getting shot at by NV patrol boats up near the DMZ. Evidently we were where we weren’t supposed to be

      Hey Dave [Pud},

Hope all is well with you and your family. I’m also fine, but just not 22 any longer! I was just scrolling through the Mazama site and I came across your reply from Frank regarding our excellent adventure into Da Nang.

I too remember that trip, and as I recall we were the closest ammo ship that had [5000] para-flares on-board, and the Marines need them quickly.

Also, remember many radar watches in CIC with you, and how many thousands of cups of coffee we drank during those watches!!

Shoot me an e-mail when you get a second. I’d love to hear from you.

Greetings, I remember that excursion into Da Nang Harbor to deliver para flares to the marines. I also recall the boats in the water on the lookout for sappers and seeing para flares descending to earth over parts of the city. Many of those on deck we’re armed with Thompsons and 45s.
I also have photos of the boat that came to our ship in Cam Ranh Bay, the helicopter that air lifted a shipmate from the fantail of the ship (I think it was a medical evacuation), the tight berthing quarters, and other scenes of Navy life in the Vietnam war zone.

I hope our shipmates have or will receive free health exams through the VAs Agent Orange Registry. I have one of the fourteen illness associated with Agent Orange exposure and a claim now being considered by the VA.

    Be well,

Riding In (aka Bear or Running Bear)

I REMEMBER DELIVERING PARA FLARES IN DANANG HARBOR,PRETTY SCARY EVENT. WE WERE A SITTING DUCK OUT THERE, SURROUNDED ON ALL SIDES BY TALL CLIFFS. I ALSO REMEMBER WONDERING WHY WE HAD TAKEN A COUPLE JAR HEADS WITH US WHEN WE LEFT RHODE ISLAND. I BELIEVE THEY WERE DEPLOYED AS DIVERS IN THE HARBOR TO PROTECT AGAINST EXPLOSIVES BEING ATTACHED TO THE HULL. TAKE CARE EVERYONE
