Email from Bill Gohde forwarded to Doc, August 16, 2010. Note, we have the photos and they will be posted on the web site in the future):

Phil: When the USS Mazama was decommissioned in 1970, the US Naval Bureau donated the brass ship’s bell to Old St David’s Colonial Church in Cheraw, South Carolina – founded in 1768. Enclosed are a few photos of the USS Mazama’s ship’s bell and its home Old St. David’s Church in Cheraw, South Carolina . Heat has delayed a recent visit to the bell tower. I hope you and your fellow sailors will enjoy seeing it again.

Enclosed is my contact information. I also just received an e-mail from DarrellNelson of Red Wing, MN today requesting the same information.

Best regards, Phil Powell – Town of Cheraw Visitor’s Bureau PO Box 219, Cheraw, SC .
